The Story of Salena’s, Nox & RYCE with Kelly Metras
Sunday Mar 26, 2023
Sunday Mar 26, 2023
Ep. 14 Kelly Metras, co-owner of Salena’s Mexican Restaurant, Salena’s Taqueria, Nox, and co-founder of BOSSY, is someone that is pessimistically optimistic, believing that it is our job as local business owners to make our communities better. She believes that community engagement should be the primary focus of businesses, as we are only as strong as the community that we do business in; if our communities are failing to thrive, it is a direct reflection of the businesses surrounding them.
In 2014, Kelly created BOSSY with fellow entrepreneur Kelly Bush, in response to dealing with the complexities of working in a male dominated industry. The goal of BOSSY is to support and lift women business owners in their community, helping to make sure all voices are at the table.
In 2015, Kelly founded RYCE (Rochester Youth Culinary Experience) which developed and opened a full-service restaurant with a group of 12 high school students from a culinary program in the City of Rochester. The program was discontinued for many reasons, which she will gladly talk about if you ask, but the lessons learned, and the insight gained, remain a huge part of the growth plan for her current businesses.
Kelly’s belief in a community centered approach is reflected in all of her life choices. She is cautious and aware of how her money is recycled back into the local economy, and supports grassroots organizations in any way that she can, often through advertising dollars and partnerships. The focus of many of these partnerships is to assist those on the front lines lifting community members that are disproportionately affected by deep-seeded racist policies and practices.
Kelly's passion is to continue to meet new people doing amazing things, and to connect us all so that we can all thrive.

Kelly Bush: Working through Trauma
Sunday Feb 26, 2023
Sunday Feb 26, 2023
Season 2 Episode 13 I'm sure you're thinking "It must be nice to be co-founder of Bossy ROC and owner of three businesses." But in this episode, you'll learn how Kelly Bush went from dreaming of a life of fame in the arts to running a bar; and how her ability to improv got her through tumultuous life events; both physically and emotionally.
Kelly Bush never thought she would become a business owner, as she was sure she was going to be a performer. After watching the movie Dirty Dancing, Kelly was inspired to write a script for a new version of the movie with her as the lead.
She eventually went into business with her husband Don when they bought Marshall Street Bar and Grill. She also has a consulting business that helped other women navigate the pandemic.
As a childless wife and woman business owner, Kelly has experienced the challenge of being in spaces dominated by mompreneurs, but she has learned to fill her space with different things."If anyone out there is a business owner and not a mother, a woman business owner, it's something I've struggled with before because I felt like there was like two years where every bossy happy hour, like half of the time spent was talking about what it's like to manage your home with your children and your business. And I would just sit there and get smaller and smaller and like, I can't contribute here."
ABOUT THE INTERVIEWEE:
Kelly Bush is a multi-business owner in Rochester, NY. She and her husband, Don, co-own Marshall Street Bar and Grill and the Union Tavern. Kelly owns K & B Consulting and is the co-founder of BOSSY.
Kelly graduated from college with a degree in technical theatre and design. It had been her dream since childhood to be on stage, on and behind the scenes. When she realized that the long hours and unpredictable schedule did not work for her or her anxiety. She left the professional theatre world and began her career as a Behavioral Specialist at a therapeutic, day treatment school.
It was here that she became close with Kelly Metras, a casual friend that came on as a Special Ed Teacher. During their time there, the Kelly's became important and essential supports for each other, which continued on as they transitioned into small business owners. It was during this time that BOSSY was formed.
Kelly has served as President of the local chapter of the NYS Restaurant Association and currently holds a board seat with the state association. She is an active board member of her neighborhood and business associations and spends her limited free time hanging with her husband (outside of work) and playing with her sweet pup, Lincoln.
